Food and drink in Lisbon - the Portuguese love their cuisineVisiting Lisbon's cafes and restaurants is a real pleasure. The Portuguese love their cuisine, and no wonder: the menu is amazingly varied and the portions are quite generous. Traditional Portuguese restaurants compete with many ethnic ones. Stop by a Brazilian restaurant that serves a frequent buffet. Sample cold meats, fish and hot meats. There are many pizzerias, steakhouses, Chinese and even Indian restaurants in the city. Vegetarians are more suitable for ethnic restaurants, since in Portuguese, as a rule, everything is designed for meat eaters.

Portuguese cuisine

Lisbon is located almost on the ocean coast, so fish and seafood are always present on the menu, and yet meat remains the main food of the locals. The Portuguese love soups, and they are certainly on the menu. As a starter, you will be offered savory cabbage soup with caldo verde chicken broth with a slice of spicy chourico sausage or vegetable soup sopa de legumes. Another common dish is dried cod, bacalhau.

The most popular recipes are definitely bacalhau com natas, salted cod with sour cream and potatoes. The Portuguese are very fond of squid (lulas). They are often fried in batter - large rings, and small whole. How wonderful their tentacles crunch! You can also order shrimp (satagao), grilled king prawns (gambas grelhadas), fish casserole (caldeirada), stewed squid (lulas recheadas), grilled octopus (polvo grelhado), fried sardines (sardinhas assadas), sea bass ), cod (sargo).

Potatoes (batatas), chips (batatas fritas), salad (salada mixta) with olives (azeitonas) or some vegetables such as spinach (espinafres) are most often used as a side dish. Meat takes pride of place in the menu of Portuguese restaurants. You can order uncooked steak (bife tornedo), turkey steak (bifes de Peru), grilled lamb (cabrito assado), natural veal cutlets (costeleta de vitela), barbecue chicken (frango no churrasco), baked suckling pig (leita assado) or baked pork (lombo de porco assado). Many desserts and pastries contain eggs. Try the choux pastry (pasteis de nata, pasteis de Belem), the creamy caramel (pudim) or the wonderful papos se anjo egg dish. If you don't need a gala dinner, go to a cafe.

You can grab a bite to eat at the café bars (cervejarias), which serve hot cheese and ham sandwiches (tosta mixta) or crab claws (you will be served a hammer to break them), followed by a coffee or beer. In some restaurants, a basket of bread and cheese is placed on the table even before ordering. If you don't want to pay for it, ask them to take the basket away.

Coffee in Lisbon is served in a variety of forms: espresso in small cups (uma Ysa), with milk (um meia de leite), espresso with milk (um garoto), cold with milk in a tall glass (um galao). Tea (cha) can be ordered, but milk (leite) will have to be requested separately. Many different wines are produced in Portugal. Especially famous are the regions of Estremadura (near Lisbon), Beiras, Dan, Douro (where port wine is produced) and Minho (famous for the famous green wine, vinho verde).
