 At the Soviet exhibition in New York, venerable businessmen crowded near the stand where the unique electronograph was demonstrated. They looked with interest at the device that allows a person to look into the holy of holies of matter - into the atom, to see with their own eyes the flight of an elementary particle.
And although outwardly the device looked like dozens of others - an enamelled metal box with levers, handles, scales, everyone knew: there is no such thing in any country.
An elderly man squeezed forward. Straightening his tie with two fingers, he turned to the guide:
- Tell me, which plant produces these wonderful devices?
- They are made not at the plant, but in the training workshops of the Moscow radio-mechanical technical school.
It was clear from the American's face that the answer seemed at least incredible to him.
In one of the quiet lanes of Zamoskvorechye, where among the old, still merchant's houses, very young residential buildings rise, there is a large five-story building. The Moscow Radio-Mechanical College is located here.
The director of the technical school shows me a lot of diplomas, certificates that students received at exhibitions in New York, London, Brussels, Buenos Aires.
- But where has not our equipment been! - says the director. But ten years ago there was almost nothing here ... - And the director begins to remember how the guys together with the teachers built their technical school: in the morning they studied, in the evening they worked at the construction site. The roof had not yet been erected, but classes were already in full swing on the first floors.
- Why am I telling you, - the director suddenly realizes, - let's go better to the shops!
And here we are at the doorstep of the assembly shop. We open the door and immediately find ourselves in a spacious room. A steady metallic thump comes from the far corner. It seems that it is a huge mechanical heart beating. And only when we get closer, I guess that the vacuum pump is making noise. After a few minutes the pump stops, and they explain to me that all the air has been pumped out of the sample chamber of the electronograph.
 “Now we need to check if the air is coming from outside,” says the director, “because if there is air, the camera will not give good pictures of particles.
The check is over, the installation of the main part of the electronograph - the electron gun - begins. It will "shoot" electrons, and an attentive watchman - a camera will catch and fix the flight of an electron. This thin trace on a photographic plate will tell scientists a lot.
I ask the principal: do the students themselves make any details?
- We do everything ourselves, - the director smiles. - All! From a tiny screw and plastic handles to a 75,000 volt power supply and an electron gun. After all, it is especially important for us that students acquire and then practice the skills of their profession using these products.
- But to assemble all this complex electronic and magnetoelectric equipment, you need to have solid experience!
- Of course. Our students have such experience: each of them during their studies practiced in the workshops of the technical school and at the radio plant. And our diploma works are usually prepared at the factory. So the guys here can work not only with a soldering iron. If you want, we can go to the radio assembly shop, you will see for yourself.
The workshop is more like a large laboratory. It's very quiet here. There are three even rows of tables, each with a small remote control. Now seismic oscilloscopes are being mounted here. One such device replaces a whole complex of recording equipment at a seismic station. A narrow electron beam records the slightest vibrations of the earth's mountain on a light-sensitive tape. The crust will shift by fractions of a millimeter - and the apparatus will immediately record it.And what is most valuable - the oscilloscope allows you to determine the distance to the source of vibration. So this is a truly versatile device.
And again, the Moscow Radio-Mechanical Technical School is the only "firm" in the world that serially produces these sensitive devices. We did not make a reservation, although this sounds somewhat paradoxical.
We come to one of the tables. Vyacheslav Zaporozhets went headlong into the installation of a complex network of electrical arteries. Deftly wielding tweezers, he quickly connects the wires. I notice that there are no drawings in front of Slava.
- I learned the scheme, - says Slava. - It's only very difficult at first, and then you get used to it ...
Slava has a dense bundle of bright colored wires in his hands.
- Multi-colored wires are easy to remember, - Vyacheslav continues. - Here yellow, for example, goes to the photocell, and red goes to the power ...
We go to another auditorium. Nobody's here. There is a small oblong box on the table.
“This is a transmitting television camera,” says the director, “part of a television set, and the entire“ studio ”fits easily into a briefcase. What is a TV for? You see, when filming a movie, the director is usually not able to see the frame that the cameraman is filming. Rather, the director sees, but only the whole scene. So the operator has to shoot the same scene several times, make a take, that is, select exactly the frame that the director needs ...
Therefore, the artists have to play each scene several times. People get tired, many meters of excess film are consumed. On the other hand, TV allows the director to see exactly the frame that the operator is filming: for this he only has to look at the screen. And another interesting detail: the director can direct the shooting even from another room!
- I wonder what the filmmakers themselves would say if they were offered to shoot with the TV?
“And they already said,” the director smiled, “after all, it was with our TV that the film“ Miraculous ”was filmed! Of course, the TV has some drawbacks, but it still helped the filmmakers a lot.
