According to my observations, the grapefruit crust and, most importantly, the white subcrust must be removed, because, as it turned out, they give a decent bitterness. As a last resort (I already thought of this so myself next time), you can pre-peel the grapefruit from the skin and scrape out the white subcrust well, and the crusts themselves for smell and more juice can be used as in an orange. Although I personally liked it so much, but I really love grapefruit and bitterness does not bother me, but the others criticized a little. Well, I said - it's not for everybody.
But you won't be able to use grapefruit extracts - they are bitter. If after the oranges I made delicious pies with the cake (I added sugar and 3 tbsp of lemon-apple marmalade, left over from last year's seaming and boiled in a micron for 15 minutes), then grapefruit didn't even try. Here the bitterness cannot be corrected by any additives.

And now I have adapted to "utilize" the syrup that remains with me after the fruit intended for drying. I use it instead of sugar (the syrup is quite concentrated). And from time to time I get orange-peach juice, then orange-apricot juice. Was even with cherries and strawberries. The main taste is dominated by orange, just due to the addition of fruit syrup it becomes a little softer.
I take a little less water (calculated as syrup), and then adjust the sweetness with citric acid. But I always make a full portion - 9-10 liters of water (it dissipates very quickly). We really like it! And there is no excess syrup. And then every time after drying I did not know what to do with it.
So the recipe is very democratic.

Also made this drink 3 times already. I like it, only the bitterness is strongly felt. The last 2 times, instead of acid, lemon juice was added. It seemed that it tasted better. I want to try from peeled oranges with a small amount of zest added.
