I tried to do it without it once, after cooling, the soap solution remained completely liquid, and also kind of "snotty", I did not like it at all, I diluted the soda with boiling water, filtered and poured it into a saucepan with gel, so it immediately thickened and began to solidify.

But for washing dishes in a small jar I put 3 tbsp. l. gel and add 1-1.5 tsp. dry mustard and mix thoroughly. This is enough for me for almost a week, because there is a dishwasher, and not everything in a row with my hands.

As for fragrances and additives - well, why not, if you want? It will not be worse! I do not bother, the gel is very easily and quickly washed off, and there is absolutely no smell from it, that's enough for me.
