 Kargopol is a small old county town, as unique as its name, one of the oldest in the Russian North. We have few such towns left where literally on every street you can find either a unique church or an old mansion of unprecedented beauty, where time would flow so slowly.
And even more so today it is difficult to believe that the quiet Kargopol, which remained aloof from the railway, with hunched over from time to time wooden one-story houses and temples aspiring skyward, could compete in beauty with a dozen of the most glorious cities in Russia. It stands on the banks of the Onega River, where it flows from Lake Lacha.
It is believed that Kargopol is a year older than Moscow, but how unlike it is in its spirit and way of life! Of course, before you go on an exciting trip, you need to understand what awaits there. If you like quiet rest, you are interested in the history of Russia, you are a fan of architecture, then Kargopol and its surroundings will not disappoint you. This is a land with a rich history, unsolved mysteries and beautiful legends. There are more than 100 unique monuments of wooden and stone architecture. These are clean rivers and clear lakes rich in fish. These are endless forests full of mushrooms and berries. These are Kargopol traditional crafts and trades known all over the world.
If you are suddenly going to this glorious city, you will appreciate all the charm of these places. This is one of the ancient cities of the Russian North. Scientists have expressed their opinion about its foundation from the 11-12th century. In accordance with the chronicle sources, Prince Vladislav made a campaign in 1146. From here the countdown began from the creation of Kargopol.
From the ancient language Kargopol is translated as "bearish field" or "bearish side". In 1565 Kargapol was enrolled in 19 "royal cities". Kargapol was considered a place of exile for Tatars, wives after divorce, objectionable military men and other persons. Prince Andrey Shuisky found his peace here in 1587. In 1607, the leader of the uprising Ivan Bolotnikov was exiled here, and later killed.
The main decoration of the city is, of course, its ancient white-stone temples. They are called "delightful" here. They stand out for their elegance and dissimilarity. This style is called Kargopol pattern. Most delightful is the Cathedral of the Annunciation, which rivals Florence's Renaissance palaces in sophistication. On closer examination, a slight violation of symmetry is visible, namely, all windows are not alike. On the walls there are decorations in the form of white stone patterns.
Nativity of Christ Cathedral is an ancient stone building in the city. It seems to grow into the ground and from a distance is somewhat reminiscent of an epic hero; over time, two borders and a porch were attached to it. However, these various extensions did not spoil the temple, thanks to them it is unique, surprisingly harmonious. Be sure to inspect it from the inside. It was erected in the likeness of the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin and suffered all the hardships and deprivations of time. During a fire in 1765, the temple suffered significant damage. The fire destroyed all the frescoes. There are fragments and an unusual bracket that looks like a huge hand. In general, eleven temples have survived in Kargopolye.
Kargopol land was and remains the homeland of artisans: local residents not only erected wooden and temples from stone, but also created, carved spinning wheels, utensils, weaved, molded toys... Painted wooden ladles, various spinning wheels, and patterned rolls adorn the museum of local lore on a former trading floor among stuffed ermines, wolves and foxes. Gold, pearl embroidery is kept behind the glass of the old cabinet.Here you will also find a showcase with toys that have repeatedly delighted visitors to exhibitions in Europe, Asia and America.
You will be enchanted by its splendor and silence Kenozersky National Park. A land located in the taiga, where many lakes have preserved the atmosphere of ancient Russia. Houses, chapels, churches made of wood bear all the beauty of architecture of the talented masters of Russia. And all this in dense forests on all kinds of islands. The Museum of Wooden Architecture found its refuge in the park. Its buildings are of the 16th century. Numerous villages still have ancient names, appearance and life of the local population. Anyone who finds himself here will surely see old huts, chapels, "holy groves" that have survived from pagan times. When you get here, you will find yourself in the past, in the 19th century.
Local residents still prefer to rinse their clothes in the river, there are woodpiles of firewood in each courtyard, water brought from spring places, some streets near Cathedral Square are paved with wooden pavements. There are still no high buildings here, and all residents know each other by sight.
