Shepherd's Pie

Ingredients

Meat (beef, pork, or mixed mince) 500 g
Bulb onions 1 PC
Carrot 1 PC
Tomato paste 3 tbsp. l.
Boiling water 100 g
Garlic 1 tooth
Potatoes 800 g
Milk 100 g
Butter 50 g
Hard cheese 50 + 30 g
Salt pepper taste
Vegetable oil for frying
Green onions for serving

Cooking method

  • Peel the potatoes, chop coarsely and boil in salted water until tender. Drain the water.
  • Mash the mashed potatoes. This time I used a new potato maker from Ikea. Like this:
  • I liked it very much. The puree turned out to be very tender, airy and without lumps.
  • Add hot milk, butter, grated cheese to the puree, mix.
  • Pass the meat through a large grate of a meat grinder. I did on Meat grinder CASO FW 2000
  • Peel onions and carrots, grate on a medium grater. Pass the garlic through a press.
  • Fry the onions, carrots, garlic in hot oil until soft.
  • Add minced meat, fry, stirring occasionally for 7 minutes.
  • Add tomato paste, boiling water, stir, season to taste and simmer for about 20 minutes, covered. I cooked in the Steba pressure cooker, Meat mode, pressure 0.7, 6 minutes. The pressure was released forcibly.
  • Grease a heat-resistant form (you can do one, you can portionwise), put the meat, then the potatoes, grate the cheese on top (30 g).
  • Shepherd's Pie
  • Bake in an oven preheated to 180-200C for 20-30 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the finished dish with chopped green onions.
  • It can be served both warm and cold.
  • Shepherd's Pie
  • Shepherd's Pie is a classic British dish. The name of this dish is deeply rooted in history. It comes from the English word Shepherd, which means a shepherd who grazed sheep. According to another version, the name of this dish was given ... by the sheep themselves. It is also called Cottage Pie. So it began to be called in 1791, when potatoes began to be eaten by the poorest people living in cottages.
  • There are many variations of it, both within the country and abroad. Somewhere it is called potato pie, somewhere potato casserole. In every kitchen, something is added to the recipe, something changes. I have one of the options today. Of course, in the original you need to use lamb, but ... we will proceed from our financial capabilities.)

The dish is designed for

4 servings

Oh how delicious
Ksenia is a very wonderful pie.

Oksan, where did you buy such a uniform?

Omela
Nataliya, Thank you!

The molds are Italian ceramic, there were 2 pieces of different sizes in the set, I bought it 5 years ago from us in Three Whales for a promotion for ridiculous money.

Oh, how beautiful - and the casserole, and the ceramic form, and the photograph - a sheer temptation!
And most importantly - a completely win-win recipe. That is, it simply has no right to turn out tasteless

Ksyusha, and I usually make potatoes down, and meat on top. Or interlayer, i.e. potato-meat-potato. And so it doesn't crumble like meat downwards when transferred to a plate?

Tanyulya
Beautiful!
And the forms are so desirable
I do the same in layers, like casseroles as we were given in kindergarten.

Omela, I also want ceramic molds and this is a wonderful recipe, as one of the baking options !! Thank you, add to your bookmarks!

Olya, thanks! When shifting, it turns out as in the bottom photo. Of course, some meat stays in shape, but I carefully slip it under the piece. The potatoes on top of me are of principle, because the child eats meat poorly, but good potatoes. Plus he really likes the cheese crust on top. I took it off all the pie at once.

Tanyulya, Tanya, thanks! Yes, the shapes are very good. Were on the action, I took the last set.

Bianchi, Thank you! I would be glad. if it comes in handy.

For the sake of fairness, it must be said that in the UK since the 20th century, the term "shepherd's pie" has been used only when the meat is mutton. If the meat is not mutton, then this dish has a different name: "cottage pie". Here pie is a pie, cottage is a modest dwelling of rural peasants. That is, it turns out something like "Homemade Pie". However, this is also no less tasty than such a pie with lamb ... And the French have a similar dish "Ashi Parmentier" (Hachis Parmentier), and it is not known for certain which of these dishes is older ...
Omela
Kapet, very interesting

Omela, I have long wanted to cook a shepherd's pie, but for some reason my hands did not reach. Well, in vain! Everything is simple and affordable. Cooks three to four times faster than lasagna. Delicious!
