  • Hermann Pückler-Muskau, count, from 1822 prince, traveler, gardener, writer, major of the Russian army, prototype of Münghausen from the book of Karl Immermann.
  • Born on October 30, 1785 on his mother's estate Moscow (Muskau), now Poland, Luzhitsa.
  • In 1792, after the death of his mother, his father was left alone with seven children and gave Hermn to a monastery in Moravia, where he received his primary education. In 1796 he was sent to the famous Philanthropinum school in Dessau. In 1800, at the age of 15, he entered the Faculty of Law of the University of Leipzig, from which he graduated in 1803. After graduation, he joined the Guards of the Duke of Saxony in Dresden.
  • In 1806, after the conquest of Saxony by Napoleon and its transformation into a kingdom, in the rank of captain he went on an indefinite leave during which he made a long journey through the French Empire. Walked around Provence and Piedmont.
  • In 1811, his father died and he had to return home to manage the huge Muskau estate. The estate manager was the future famous poet and composer Leopold Schaefer with whom Hermann Pückler became friends, and in addition met Goethe. In 1812, together with Shefer, he advised a trip to England, where he studied the local parks.
  • On the pretext of a serious illness, he evaded participation in the war of France against Russia. In 1815, he began to build his world-famous Muskau Park on the two banks of the Neisse River, with an area of 560 hectares, which took 30 years to build. Carts bring black soil from other regions and transplants already mature trees. Moves several villages close to the park. Now this park on the border between Germany and Poland is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • In 1838, Karl Lebrecht Immermann published his famous satirical novel "Munchausen", in which the main character, the grandson of the famous baron, was written off from Prince Pückler-Muskau.
  • In 1843, at the invitation of the King of Prussia, who appreciated his Muskau Park, he began work on the construction of the Babelsberg Park in Potsdam.
  • In 1845, unable to independently maintain his gigantic park in Muskau, he sold it for 1.7 million thalers to Count Hatzfeld, who resold it to the royal house of the Netherlands. He built his second Branitz park in Cottbus, where he built an artificial pyramid in the center of the pond. In the same year, by order of the Duke of Weimar, he planned the construction of Ettersburg Park in Weimar. This is the second park designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
  • One of the guidebooks to Branitz Park says the following about him: “Pückler was a multi-talented person with varied interests. He communicated with famous personalities of his time, from Napoleon III to Goethe. With an eccentric lifestyle and numerous acquaintances with women, he created advertising for himself. He was a park builder, writer and world reveler. " inf. from severr.livejournal.com
