Cooking method

  • A wonderful, very family-run, interesting and beautiful tradition! The first piece in our house is always cut for the Lord, the second for Jesus, the third for the Mother of God. For the winner, the owner of the house (my husband) appoints a cash prize, the year before last a piece of basilopita with a phantom went to the Mother of God, we took the money to the church. The Mother of God guarded us all year! In the past, our house won, we cut a piece for it, because this is a part of us! I bought a wonderful mixer for my home. We love this cake and this tradition! Try it too!
  • Vasilopita - Vasily's pie.
  • A bit of history:
  • Vasilopita, according to Greek tradition, is cut at a family feast immediately after the arrival of the new year, usually after eating and drinking, followed by a card game "for a good new year." So, exactly at 12 in the night with the onset of the new year, the lights are turned off and after one minute it is turned on again, with general wishes for “long life” and “happy new year”.
  • Then Vasilopita is served at the table, after which the owner of the house, having crossed it with a knife three times, begins to divide it into triangular parts for each family member or friends and relatives present, dedicating the first piece to the house (or to Christ, Our Lady and St. Basil), then to the householder , a housewife and others present in the order of kinship and age, giving the last piece to the poor or, again, to the house, not forgetting about refugees, sick people and other family members who are absent for any reason.
  • The cutting of Vasilopita also occurs on other days of the "twelve-day" holidays, while in organizations, societies, etc. - until February. This custom is very old and originates from the ancient feast of the "Saturns" (the Roman "followers of Saturn"), which was celebrated by the Franks, from where the tradition of placing a coin inside a cake came from and proclaiming the "King of the evening" whoever found it, or, according to another tradition, instead of a coin, beans were placed and whoever found it was proclaimed the bean king. In addition to this Western European custom, which has already passed, there is also a Christian tradition in Europe, which is associated with the image of the Great Basil.
  • So, according to Christian tradition, once in Caesarea of Cappadocia in Asia Minor, where the Great Basil was bishop, the Sub-Prefect of Cappadocia invaded with the intention of plundering it. Then the Great Basil asked the rich people of his city to bring all the gold that they could collect in order to bribe the advancing conqueror. Indeed, a lot of jewels were gathered. According to legend, either because the Sub-Prefect changed his mind, or (in another opinion) with the help of a miracle, when Saint Mercury drove his army with a flock of Angels, the Sub-Prefect saved the city from the impending catastrophe. But when the Great Basil was about to give the jewels to their owners, not knowing who owned what, he gave an order to bake small loaves of bread, in which he put one of the coins or jewels and distributed them to the residents the next day after Matins. This event resulted in double joy, along with avoiding the destruction of the city and the custom continued after his death in memory of him (celebration of Saint and Great Basil).
  • Here's an interesting story.
  • Beat the butter with a mixer gradually adding sugar.
  • Add eggs one at a time, whisking constantly with a mixer.
  • New Year's pie Delicate Vasilopita
  • Add vanilla, zest and gradually pouring in milk and juice, continue to beat at low speed.
  • Add the sifted flour in portions and constantly mix with a spatula, it is possible at low mixer speeds, you get a thick dough, slightly thicker than for pancakes.
  • New Year's pie Delicate Vasilopita
  • We place the dough in a mold and bake about 190 "on the middle shelf for 40-50 minutes, it all depends on your oven, if the top quickly turns brown, cover it with foil, check it with a splinter.
  • New Year's pie Delicate Vasilopita
  • Free the cooled cake from the mold and sprinkle with powdered sugar on a dish.
  • Wrap a coin or "fant" at your discretion in foil and stick deeper into the bottom of the cake.

Anastasia, baked a cake?

Oh, just saw I apologize for the delay in answering
Of course, I baked it more than once, a gorgeous dish. The first time I baked on NG 2013, just after Natasha published the recipe. The coin was put in, and the son got it. Then she baked at the request of the family. This year he will definitely be on the New Year's table.

Natalia, Hello! Happy New Year!
Today I baked your "Tender Vasilopita". For some reason, it has not risen enough. What could be the reason? Maybe it depends on the baking powder? I put 1.5 spoons without a top, but how is it right?
natapit
Olga, thank you and happy holiday! It is better to have full spoons, because our flour (in Ukraine) is denser! But chances are you didn't beat the butter, sugar and eggs well.

Found two Natasha's recipes for basilopita on our website.
