  • Ginger beer
  • ... At eleven forty-five a creature entered the cellar. The first violin took A flat instead of A; the clarinet let the rooster go in the middle of the grace; Miss Carrington snorted, and the young man, parted, swallowed an olive pit.
  • The newcomer looked delightfully and immaculately rustic. A skinny, awkward, clumsy guy with flaxen hair, with an open mouth, clumsy, stupefied from the abundance of light and the audience. He wore a peanut butter suit and a bright blue tie, bony arms protruding four inches from his sleeves, and ankles in white socks protruding from under his pants the same length. He knocked over a chair, sat down on another, screwed his leg around the table leg and smiled ingratiatingly at the footman who came up to him.
  • - I would have a glass ginger beer, - he said in response to a polite question from the waiter ... (O. Henry "Cellar and Rose")
  • To be honest, I have never heard of such a beer. Therefore, I came to refer to the Russian Wikipedia for home brewing ( 🔗):
  • Before the introduction of lager beer, there were times in American history when ginger beer outnumbered hopped beer and cider combined in sales. Its widespread acceptance and popularity in the history of brewing allows us to make a strong assumption that alcohol was originally present in it. And the recipe for its preparation, where the main ingredients were: ginger, sugar, water, yeast, is mentioned in the book "Attested Correspondence of Scientific Colleagues", first published in 1819.
  • I will not bore you with recipes from the 19th century, especially since in some places individual ingredients are, to put it mildly, ambiguous (for example, fish glue). Fast forward to the 21st century. As they say, times change. Today if you order in England, America or Australia "Ginger beer", You will be served a carbonated soft drink with a ginger flavor.
  • Ginger beer
  • We will cook it according to the recipe Jamie Oliver:
  • Break the ginger into large pieces, peel without fanaticism (the peel gives a certain piquancy). Grate on a coarse grater.
  • Add sugar and mix well.
  • Remove the peel from the lemon and add to the ginger, squeeze the lemon juice there.
  • Add water, mix thoroughly.
  • Put a lot of ice in a glass, add mint and strain the ginger beer through a sieve. You can add more sugar if very bitter.
  • Of course now is not the season !!!! But considering how delicious it was for me on a cold October evening, I can imagine what a refreshing effect it will have in the July heat. (y) I am definitely using it !!!!

Ginger

Originally from tropical Asia, ginger, or zingiber, was widely used by the Greeks as well as the Romans who brought it to Britain.

The health benefits of ginger are enormous. In Sanskrit, ginger means - a universal medicine. And it fully lives up to its name.

Ginger is primarily a herb with hemodynamic (circulatory) properties and a pronounced effect on the heart and blood. Japanese researchers found that ginger makes the heart beat faster and more slowly, and that after eating ginger, blood pressure drops by 10 to 15 points. The blood vessels relax and dilate, lowering blood pressure and allowing the heart to beat more slowly to pump blood throughout the body. This, along with stronger heart beats, means that blood is pumped more efficiently throughout the body.

Indian researchers have found that ginger is also effective in removing cholesterol from the blood and liver.

Dutch researchers have found that ginger effectively prevents blood clots, which is similar in its effect to aspirin.

Ginger also soothes the stomach while aiding digestion. It reduces gas production, flatulence and cramps, and facilitates the breakdown of food in the stomach and absorption in the small intestine.

The research team found that ginger is very effective in relieving motion sickness, nausea and vomiting, and even more effective than dramamine, a drug of choice for these conditions.

It is also used for complaints caused by rheumatism or arthritis. Numerous studies have shown that not only does ginger relieve symptoms of arthritis, but in many cases it appears to cure the disease itself.

Various components isolated from ginger also have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, diuretic, antifungal, antiseptic, antibiotic and narcotic properties.

It has been found to be effective in treating cataracts, heart disease, migraines, strokes, amenorrhea, sore throat, athlete's foot, bursitis, chronic fatigue, colds and flu, coughs, depression, dizziness, fever, infertility and erection problems, kidney stones, Raynaud's disease, sciatica, tendinitis, and among other things with viral infections.

BUT, like any other product, ginger has its own contraindications. So you contraindicated use ginger if you have:
• Allergy to ginger and some other products - unfortunately, you can find out for sure only with time by experience.
• Peptic ulcer in the acute stage. And in general, in case of ulcers, bypass ginger by the side - this is due to the property of ginger to thin the blood.
• If your skin does not react well to ginger. For skin inflammation, beware of ginger.
• Heat.
• Various strength of bleeding.
• Pregnancy at a later date, unless your doctor has recommended it to you to get rid of toxicosis.
• During lactation.
• If you have a medical condition such as diverticulitis, diverticulosis, gastrointestinal illness, fever, esophageal reflux.

Ernimel
Their ginger beer in the original is some distant "relative" of our kvass, as far as I understand. Only the base is not bread, but vegetable, and "fermented" it with a kind of mushroom.
