Plastic food storage containers

We all use plastic dishes. Is there a safe plastic? Let's try to decide. So, turn the container over!
🔗
The triangle of arrows is a sign of recycling of raw materials. Means that such dishes can be recycled.
The numbers inside the triangle tell about the material (1 - 19 - plastic, 20 - 39 - paper and cardboard, 40 - 49 - metal, 50 - 59 - wood, 60 - 69 - fabrics and textiles, 70 - 79 - glass). We will take a look at the most commonly used types of plastic. The lettering abbreviation of the type of plastic from which the dishes are made is indicated under the triangle.

🔗 🔗 🔗 🔗 🔗 🔗 🔗

1. PET or PET - POLYETHYLENE TEREPHTHALATE.
It is used for the manufacture of packaging - bottles, cans, boxes, etc. - for soft drinks, juices, water, it is also found in packaging for powders, bulk food products, etc. The most common. Well recyclable. It is considered one of the safest.

2. HDPE or LDPE - HIGH PRESSURE POLYETHYLENE.
It is used to make mugs, milk and water bags, bottles for detergents and cleaning agents, plastic bags. Recyclable and recyclable. Considered safe for food use.

3. PVC or PVC - POLYVINYL CHLORIDE.
It is used for packaging window cleaning liquids, edible vegetable oils, all kinds of bulk food products and edible fats. It is used in the production of floor and wall coverings, windows, garden furniture, blinds, oilcloths, bags and toys. Practically non-recyclable. It belongs to the most dangerous type of plastic. When burned, it releases very dangerous poisons into the air - dioxins. To give elasticity, phthalates are added to it, which can cause damage to the liver and kidneys, infertility, and cancer. PVC can contain bisphenol A, heavy metals and formaldehydes. Do not buy products that are packaged in PVC containers.

4. LPDE or HDPE - LOW PRESSURE POLYETHYLENE.
It is used in the production of plastic bags, bendable plastic packaging.
Considered safe for food use.

5. PP or PP - POLYPROPYLENE
It is used to make disposable cups, bottle caps, ketchup and syrup bottles, yogurt cups. As well as toys and feeding bottles for children. Scientists believe that he does not pose a danger to human health and the environment... Such dishes do not change their properties even at 150 * C. But it easily lends itself to chemical attack, releasing dangerous phenol and formaldehyde. therefore you cannot drink alcohol from such dishes and store fatty foods in it - for example, butter and vegetable oil!

6. PS or PS - POLYSTYRENE.
It is used in the production of pallets for meat and poultry, containers for eggs, cutlery and cups, building insulation. It is obtained during the polymerization of styrene, which is carcinogenic. Designed for cold foods only. Gives off dangerous styrene when heated.

7. OTHER - OTHER.
Mixture of different plastics or polymers not listed above. Not recyclable. Often this group includes polycarbonate, from which food containers and disposable dishes are made. Unfortunately, polycarbonate is also used in the manufacture of plastic baby bottles. When heated, washed frequently, or used for a long time, bisphenol A can be released from these products, causing serious hormonal disturbances.Canada has already banned the production and import of baby bottles made from this plastic, and many European manufacturers have also begun to produce BPA-free baby dishes. When buying, check - bottles (nipples, breast pumps) should be marked "0% BPA, which means that there is no BPA.

Sometimes it is possible to find no signs at all on Russian dishes. Do not use such utensils! When cooking in a microwave oven, give preference to glass and ceramic dishes: if the plastic container says "microwave safe", it means that the plastic will not change shape when irradiated, but no one guarantees that it does not emit harmful substances into food.

Good information, thanks a lot!

This for me was once a strong surprise, to put it mildly, when everyone around in the forest and on a picnic is taking plastic cups and plates for barbecue, and it turns out from such dishes there are hot barbecue and drink vodka no, no

Also ... in the markets for a long time, all the old ladies switched to such containers and boldly sell milk in it. I heard that you can't reuse bottles, and even more so for milk ... that something also stands out?

RybkaHere is what experts say about this: "The significant drawbacks of PET containers are its relatively low barrier properties. It lets ultraviolet rays and oxygen into the bottle, and outward - carbon dioxide, which degrades the quality and shortens the shelf life of the product. that the high molecular weight structure of polyethylene terephthalate is not an obstacle for gases having small molecular sizes relative to the polymer chains. dopleta , that is, what happens ... it's okay,
It's okay if these grannies do not pour hot milk there (since only cold liquids up to 40 * C can be kept in such a container) and chemical solvents such as phenols, aniline, benzyl alcohol, etc. - in such cases, PET dissolves ...
RybkA
Well, I think no one is pouring hotter for sure ... here is a divorced one - yes But all the same, these bottles really confuse me, hto he knows what they used to pour me somehow with their jar more calmly.

and on the ikeevsky container the abbreviation PP-R ....?

and further...
I've been confused for a couple of months now by the fact that no plaque has formed on a plastic dog's water bowl. that is, even if the water is in the bowl for 2 days, nothing mucous is found on the walls.
This is a microwave container purchased in M-video, PP.
After a time of use, it was deformed and the lid now does not hold, but you can write any letters.

SensPP-R is the international abbreviation for polypropylene random copolymer. This material is considered hygienically safe, does not form environmentally harmful substances when recycled, and therefore is recommended even by international standards when used in pipelines and for supplying drinking water, and for transporting food and chemically active liquids.

I got here, if not in the subject, sorry, tell me where to go!
Interested in vacuum, plastic dishes (containers with pumps) for storing food. I would like to buy 1-2 liters. The main criterion is quality, reliability. Well, not Chinese by itself. The network is mostly a Winzer, but in my opinion he also became Chinese. Maybe someone has, advise.

I cleaned up all my little boxes and bought a bunch of all kinds of Tupperware instead, - now I really felt the difference - the old ones smell like plastic, PPC, but the Tupper ones don't! Expensive, of course, but health is more expensive!

Let me not agree with you, I have a lot of all sorts of containers, now I have revised everything - the same letters 5 PP are on the Tupperware. And in terms of quality (compactness, non-spillability, convenience, etc.), it’s like anyone. I have one container that suits me according to all criteria (85 rubles)
Guylechka
iris. ka! Yes, they also have this sign (PP), but for some reason they don't smell like plastic like everyone else! I also have cheaper ones, those that I bought before - volumes, sizes, non-spillage, in short, everything in them suited me except the smell, so I switched to Tupperver, although, to be honest, not so long ago I noticed a very, very faint smell in a compact that had spaghetti in it! I give everyone a sniff - no one senses it, maybe it's because of my dog's nose?

When I choose containers in the store, I open and smell everything. Now I will also look at the numbers from the back side. In some, the odor is still the same, while others are very odorless. In any case, the choice and price depends on the size of the wallet.
Guylechka
I do not argue and do not impose anything! I have already gone through a bunch of all sorts of containers, and even if they don't smell at first, then over time the smell still appears! And "PP" is on all the cutters that are sold in the crockery departments.

And who uses which trays to store and heat food?
Are there safe ones except (glass and stainless steel)?
AlenaT
For some reason, I cannot put plastic in the microwave, only ceramic-faience.
I have such a complex!)))
Is it possible to use stainless steel or other metal in a micr?

To work every day, it will be hard to wear pottery-faience
The stainless steel is understandably impossible, it was incorrectly expressed. Means for storage.
In general, I would like to have plastic trays that can be everywhere and are not harmful to health (if there are any)

And I don’t recognize Tapper’s either. Plastic - it is plastic, even at least a hundred times expensive and relatively high quality. In exchange, I bought glass trays from Pyrex and Luminarka with lids, Pyrex glass and glass-ceramic forms and pots for the microwave. And Tupper plastics are not bad for freezing and for very short storage or transportation of food

Caprice! I absolutely agree with you - there is nothing better than glass! I realized this a long time ago, heat-resistant pots since Soviet times + bought new ones, also vessels with lids, in which I store the prepared dishes - environmentally friendly and put beautifully on the table. And to be honest, I was disappointed in tapperware plastic - they still have a smell of chemistry ... plastic is plastic, whatever one may say, but without it, well, no way - I give my husband food in tapper dishes to work
Kestrel
dopletaand don't know how sous vide bags should be labeled? What's the best? PP - but then how to cook fat (relatively) foods in them? After all, meat can be quite fatty, and in many recipes even a piece of plums. oils are added to the bag ... What do you think?
dopleta
Kestrel, the film and bags for sous-vide are made of special food grade plastic, which begins to disintegrate only at temperatures well above 100aboutC, and we don't use such a temperature in sous-form.
