Fish from the depths

Fish from the depthsToday the ocean floor in the regions of its maximum depths is known much less well than the surface of the Moon and even, perhaps, Mars. Undoubtedly, here in the ocean, many amazing discoveries await us. One of them is almost revealed.

We are talking about fish, close relatives of the well-known cod and haddock, although this can hardly be said in appearance. According to the norms of fish "fashion", their appearance is strange: a large heavy head passes into a short body, ending with a long tail, gradually becoming thinner and often turning into a thin thread.

Fish from the depthsSometimes the body has a drop-like shape and is decorated with the same thin tail. These strange creatures, resembling giant tadpoles, are widespread in the Philippine Islands. For this peculiarity of the tail, they are called rat-tails. Their official Latin name "grenadier" is more euphonic. Translated into Russian, it means "long-tailed". All these fish have very large eyes, and the deeper the fish dwell, the larger the eyes. Apparently, vision is of great importance to them. This is indicated by the size of the eyes, the huge pupil, and the colossal number of light-sensitive rods in the retina. The Filipino nonsenses have 20 million of them in every square millimeter of the retina! In humans, the entire eye has only 130 million rods.

Like other deep sea fish, many grenadier fish use their own lighting. Fish do not know how to produce light on their own. They have to resort to the help of glowing bacteria. Tiny illuminators live in special glands located on the belly. Probably, each type of fish has its own special lighting, since the light they emit has different shades. Despite the apparent autonomy of bacteria, fish are able to control lighting. With the help of special muscles, they squeeze luminous mucus from numerous glands and flaunt a belly shining in the darkness.

Fish from the depthsLong-tailed there are up to 300 species. These fish are among the usual inhabitants of the ocean, only they live at considerable depths, which is why they are caught in fishing nets less often than cod. A favorite place for them is depths of 500-4000 meters. Many are able to live only in a narrow temperature range from 0 to ^ plus 5 degrees, and the rest can withstand the "heat" no higher than plus 15 °.

The long-tail is quite impressive in size - 40-60 centimeters. There are also larger ones, with a body length of more than a meter. Large depths restrain prey. Only the blunt-nosed grenadier, which forms large clusters in the North Atlantic at a relatively shallow depth, often ends up on the shelves of our fish stores. The liver of these fish contains a lot of fat and vitamins. While exploring the ocean, a person will undoubtedly find a way to catch these bottom deep-sea fish.

Fish from the depthsThe second barrier from the ocean to the kitchen will have to be overcome by merchants. Painfully unattractive, their appearance is unusual. This is why grenadiers go on sale without a head or a tail. Advertising will have to do some serious work before buyers start to take an interest in these fish. And the name will have to come up with a sounder sound, but these psychological barriers are surmountable.
